The Big Room – Carlsbad Cavern Dwarfed by a towering formation called a “totem pole,” this group of stalagmites was created from the same mineral-laden water as the stalactites hanging above them. On the cave ceiling above, formations called “chandeliers” were created when water seeping down from the surface formed rings on the ceiling. The calcite deposits along the rings eventually grew into these spectacular formations.
