Ephemeral Lake of Salt Basin

Runoff from heavy summer rains collects in the usually-dry dust bowl of the Salt Basin, creating this ephemeral lake. The Guadalupe Mountains rise from the desert plains beyond the opposite shore. Appearing cool and inviting, the brackish water provides little sustenance for wildlife. Within a few days, percolation and evaporation will return the Salt Basin to its dry, crusty-white appearance.
